The Multi-Cultural Center has developed a nationally recognized program that
provides orientation services to newcomers. Representatives from the
State's Attorney's Office, the Sheriff's Department, the Police Department, the
Fire Department and other emergency rescue personnel, as well as the Mayor join
with the staff of the Multi-Cultural Center to meet with ethnic community
members.
Informal sessions make it possible to develop a rapport between officials and
newcomers. Civic representatives orient newcomers and newcomers help to
increase cross-cultural understanding. The goal of this outreach is to
reduce the number of incidents of misunderstandings and violations of laws and
community norms.
